Summer Camps WKU Center for Gifted Studies A gateway to many summer opportunities is the Duke University Talented Identification Program (TIP). Seventh graders who scored a 95% or better on any section of a standardized test their sixth grade year are encouraged to take an off-level test, either the ACT or SAT. This off-level testing attempts to measure what the student knows without putting a ceiling on the test (e.g., a sixth grade test only measure up to a sixth grade level.) Students who score as well or better than 85% of college bound seniors are recognized. In 2006, 70,024 seventh graders participated on the national level with 1,346 qualifying for state recognition in Kentucky and with 80 Kentucky students qualifying for Grand Recognition. Part of the recognition is that the student receives information about many learning opportunities including those at Western Kentucky University. The three-week camp done in conjuntion with Duke's TIP offers one class for indepth study for those with qualifying ACT or SAT scores. There is also a two-week enrichment camp for students finishing grades 6, 7, and 8. For additional information please go to www.wku.edu/gifted or call 270-745-6323.
